Our Ancestor Rev. John Witherspoon who signed the Declaration on Independence
Rev. James Hamilton Witherspoon's parents were David (from N. Carolina--born 1758) and Elizabeth (Gordon) Witherspoon. They married in Kings Mountain, PA on June 16, 1791. Her father was Revolutionary War Captain George Gordon.
Captain David Witherspoon also fought in the Revolutionary War. He was in the battle of Kings Mountain. David's father was John Witherspoon (great grandfather of J.G. Witherspoon--my grandfather). John died September 1778. John was a lateral descendant (cousin) of Rev. John Witherspoon, President of Princeton University and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Be sure and read more about Rev. John Witherspoon by clicking on his underlined name. I (Nancy Allen) believe his middle name was Knox. He also had a son named John Knox Witherspoon, Jr.
Captain David Witherspoon also had a brother John who died in 1760. John was also in the battle of King's Mountain.
