Celebrating God's Miracle

Our Beautiful Daughter Abby Paige Merritt

Proverbs 3:5,6 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Dear Family and Friends,

Today we celebrate a special day. It has been one year since Abby became part of our family. What an amazing miracle the Lord worked for us!

One time when Daniel, my husband, and I were discussing the fact that I could not have children, he just simply stated that God would have to do two things for us to raise a child. One--she would have to be over two (for my health's sake.) Two--someone would have to offer us a child as a private adoption would be all we could afford. (We were able to afford it because Daniel just "happened" to complete a business sale just prior to these events.) I did not have faith then that both of those would ever happen. How weak I was in my faith.

In August of 2008, a couple, members of our church were led by the Lord to ask us if we would be willing to adopt one of their relatives, a child who was living with them. I want to mention here that Daniel was completely taken with the toddler, Abby, and she with him before this ever happened.

She had been abandoned... and had failed to thrive. She had shut herself down. At 3-1/2, she was still in diapers and could talk very little. She didn't interact with their five children, and she rarely slept. The Lord laid it on their hearts that she needed more attention than what they could give...plus the fact that they knew we loved children. Abby's relative cried so very hard as she told us her heart. It was so difficult for them both...yet they followed the Lord's leading.

So many miracles happened along the way. A man involved in the case, unexpectedly testified several times on our behalf which had great weight with the judge and he was coming to church at the time.

The man who was believed to be the birth father was found and notified. Amazingly, closing a loop hole we never expected to do. He showed up the first court hearing, but gave up.

The day of the hearing we were expecting to at least have to go for one more hearing three months from that day due to some legal technicalities. However, amazingly, the judge closed the case that day--waving the six month waiting period and a post placement home study. We were SO ecstatic over that development.

Looking back, I feel so extremely humbled at all the miracles the Lord worked for us to be parents. I certainly did not deserve them--what a gracious God we serve!

So today we celebrate God's wondrous gift to us of Abby Paige Merritt. I thank the Lord for all your prayers on our behalf... and for giving us the "trust" as mentioned in the above verse, when our own was so inadequate.

May God be with you all.

Love,

Rachael
